French association on pruritus

At the start of 2024, we are pleased to announce the creation of the « Association Française pour le Traitement et l'Etude du Prurit (AFTEP) ».

This multi-disciplinary association of doctors from different specialties (dermatologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, geriatricians, nephrologists, neurologists, hepatologists, hematologists, allergists, neurologists, psychiatrists, immunologists, internists, etc.), together with pharmacists and researchers, is largely (and modestly) inspired by the International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI) for future actions.

More than 10 % of the population suffers from pruritus, for a wide variety of reasons, yet until now it has been difficult to treat and has often been neglected. Developments in fundamental and clinical research are nevertheless leading to great hopes, and it's time to bring together in France all those interested in this very distressing symptom.

Our first actions will be as follows:

• Multidisciplinary consultation meetings to discuss difficult cases
• Creation of a website
• Creation of a network of anti-pruritus centers, similar to pain relief centers
• Organization of an annual symposium and other training activities
• Joint clinical, translational, therapeutic, fundamental and psychological research projects
• Guidelines and recommendations
